Warning: Mega post ahead!Inspiration, it's everywhere.
So are you ready for this? Clickity!
BooksGoodreads for helping me keep track of what I've read over the year. (Are you on Goodreads too? Add me up!)
Best books: 2012 began with a marathon read of George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. I also thoroughly enjoyed my old-timey aristocrats phase with The House of Mirth and Brideshead Revisited.
Most interesting book: I won "The Sacred Book of the Werewolf" in a contest and wasn't inclined to read it for its Twilight-esque cover. Dead wrong! It's one of the most inventive things I've read in a while.
Biggest disappointment: Coming from a fan of Jeffrey Eugenides, The Marriage Plot was a letdown.
Bang for Buck: Michael AR Co's The God Equation. It's a short Kindle ebook but it'll leave you wanting to read more.
Worst book: Yes, I did read Fifty Shades of Grey. In the interest of fairness, you know. And oh my God I hated it. It is the worst. I made it 70% through before I had to put it down. HATE HATE HATE HELLFIRE HATE. Please don't tell me you liked it because I will just shout HATE HATE HATE HELLFIRE HATE LALAALALALA while plugging my ears.
MusicI'm not very culturally "in-the-know" so a lot of these are songs that are quite old but I only discovered this year AND COULD NOT STOP LISTENING TO. Listen to my favorite songs of 2012!
Rufus Wainwright's Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk;
Everything it seems I like's a little bit stronger, a little bit thicker, a little bit harmful for me
Fleet Foxes' White Winter Hymnal;
And turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime...
Stars' Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It;
Take the weakest thing in you and beat the bastards with it
Leonard Cohen's Chelsea Hotel;
We are ugly but we have the music
Anna Calvi's Desire,
It's the fire, the fire, it's heavenly heavenly!
Mumford & Sons' I Will Wait;
*guitar strumming like cray cray*
Of Montreal's Grondlanc Edit;
And forgeet, forgeeet, forgeeeeet, forgeeeeet forget...
Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks (my summer jam)
Better run, better run, outrun my gun
and and and Benny Bennassi vs. Iggy Pop: Electro Sixteen
Because sometimes when the going gets tough you just need to DANCE
TV and Movies (Visual media)As someone who loves movies and TV but doesn't get to watch as often as I'd like (who've thought that were possible?!), these were the movies and shows that rocked my world and cause me to sleep less in 2012:
It's for anyone who thinks Shakespeare is boring.
TV: 2012 was the year when I finally gave in and started watching (and then getting hooked on) 30 Rock and Mad Men. But by far the best TV show I saw this year, almost 20 years too late, is Freaks and Geeks. It's touching, funny, smart, sad, everything! My sister and I are scheming to get DVDs of this from Amazon for the memories.
- Girls of a Certain Age , ran by Kim France (formerly of seminal magazines Sassy and Lucky)
- Copenhagen Cycle Chic, documenting Denmark's fashionable bike scene!
- Hauptstadtmutti (Capital Moms), capturing Berlin's stylin' moms (and the inspiration for Mommstyle!)
- Just Like Sushi, featuring the tomboy-chic looks of Dutch blogger Joy.
The Trendscolored trousers; tangerine, the color of 2012; mullet dresses; sheer skirts; ikat; and Ombre hair (paired with blood red lips, naturally). Not bad!
AAAND that's it! That's my inspiration round up of 2012. Thank you for making it to the end of this ginormous post. What do you think? What were your favorites? What do you super disagree with? Let me know!!
